The Kecskemét Artists' Colony
The Kecskemét Artists' Colony was founded in 1909 at the initiative of Mayor Elek Kada, under the artistic direction of the painter Béla Iványi-Grünwald. It soon became one of Hungary's most influential centres of artistic life, attracting many leading painters of the early 20th century.
Between 1910 and 1912, a purpose-built complex was constructed in the district known as Műkertváros, based on the designs of Tibor Szivessy and Béla Jánszky. The ensemble originally comprised six artists' villas, a painting school (destroyed in 1944), and a large shared studio building, now serving as an artists' residence.
The architecture reflects the ideals of The Young Ones (Fiatalok), an influential branch of Hungarian Art Nouveau that combined modern architectural ideas with inspiration from Hungarian folk traditions. One of the building's most distinctive features is its polygonal lookout tower rising from the south façade, an innovative design for its time.
Works created at the Artists' Colony by painters such as Béla Iványi-Grünwald, János Kmetty, Vilmos Csaba Perlrott and Géza Faragó can be admired today in the collection of the Cifrapalota (Ornamented Palace).
In 1977, the former studio building was extended with a dining hall, kitchen and communal lounge to meet the needs of contemporary artists.
Today, the complex continues to fulfil its original purpose as a creative centre. The Artists' Residence welcomes artists participating in residency programmes and creative projects, continuing the rich artistic tradition of the Kecskemét Artists' Colony.
