Katona József Memorial Stone

József Katona (1791–1830), a native of Kecskemét, was the author of Bánk bán, Hungary's first great national drama, and served his hometown as its dedicated Chief Prosecutor.
On 16 April 1830, after an exhausting court session, Katona returned to City Hall, where he suddenly collapsed at the entrance and died. The spot traditionally believed to mark his death is commemorated by a memorial stone.
The simple yet powerful monument, a split boulder symbolising Katona's tragically interrupted life and literary career, bears the inscription:
"Here broke the heart of Kecskemét's greatest son."
