House of Science and Arts - former Synagogue

The building originally served as a Synagogue, built by the Kecskemét Jewish community. It was designed in Moresque-Romantic style in 1863 by János Zitterbarth. The construction process lasted from 1864-1871. During the earthquake in 1911 the dome was so seriously damaged that it had to be replaced. In 1944 the building was used for military purposes and its furnishings were destroyed. The transformation and restoration of the neglected Synagogue started in 1970. It was the first synagogue in the country, which was not demolished but rather reconstructed inside and given a new function while preserving the outside architecture.

Today it is functioning as the House of Science and Arts, where 15 replicas of Michelangelo’s sculptures are kept along with the heritage of art Historian Károly Tolnay.

A ma a Tudomány és Művészetek Háza nevet viselő épület falai egyedülálló kincseket rejtenek: Michelangelo Buonarotti itáliai reneszánsz szobrászművész 15 leghíresebb alkotásának hiteles gipszmásolatát; többek közt a Piéta, Haldokló rabszolga, Dávid fej, Mózes és a Medici kápolna szobrainak másolatát tekinthetik meg az érdeklődők. Nemrégiben Európai Uniós pályázatból Természettudományos Tudástár és Élményközpont, iskolán kívüli oktatóhely jött létre az épületben.
