Katona József Memorial House

The father of Hungarian national drama József Katona was born in 1791 in Kecskemét, in this house. His masterpiece Bánk bán is still played all over the Hungarian theatres. The drama was the basis of the opera composed by Ferenc Erkel, which became one of the most famous pieces in Hungarian opera history. In his civil life Katona was the solicitor of Kecskemét and died at a quite young age. In the Memorial House there is an exhibition of literary history introducing József Katona’s path of life and the development of Hungarian theatrical art. The Memorial House can host programs, performances, book presentations, memorials and other events.
